Canine Bartonellosis: an Emerging Infectious Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Bartonella species are fastidious gram-negative bacteria that are highly adapted to a mammalian reservoir host and within which the bacteria usually cause a long-lasting intraerythrocytic bacteremia.1,2 In the natural host, chronic bacteremia with a Bartonella species can frequently be detected by culture or PCR in seemingly healthy individuals. Until recently, mechanisms that facilitate persistent Bartonella bacteremia in mammals were not well understood. Recent reports have identified an intra-endothelial and intraerythrocytic localization for these bacteria, which represents a unique strategy for bacterial persistence.1-6 Non-hemolytic intracellular colonization of erythrocytes and endothelial cells would preserve the organisms for efficient vector transmission, protect Bartonella from the host immune response, and potentially contribute to decreased antimicrobial efficacy.3

Serodiagnosis of Bartonella bacilliformis infection by indirect fluorescence antibody assay: test development and application to a population in an area of bartonellosis endemicity.
Bartonella bacilliformis causes bartonellosis, a potentially life-threatening emerging infectious disease seen in the Andes Mountains of South America. There are no generally accepted serologic tests to confirm the disease. We developed an indirect fluorescence antibody (IFA) test for the detection of antibodies to B. bacilliformis and then tested its performance as an aid in the diagnosis of a...

BACKGROUND Bartonella henselae (B. henselae) is considered a rare cause of granulomatous hepatitis. Due to the fastidious growth characteristics of the bacteria, the limited sensitivity of histopathological stains, and the non-specific histological findings on liver biopsy, the diagnosis of hepatic bartonellosis can be difficult to establish. Furthermore, the optimal treatment of established he...
متن کاملBartonellosis (Carrión's disease) in the modern era.
Bartonellosis remains a major problem in Peru, but many contemporary aspects of this disease have not been adequately described. We examined the cases of 145 symptomatic patients in Lima, Peru, in whom bartonellosis was diagnosed from 1969 through 1992, including 68 patients in the acute (hematic) phase and 77 patients in the eruptive (verruga) phase. In modern Peru, symptomatic patients who ha...
متن کاملBartonellosis: one health perspectives for an emerging infectious disease.
In recent years, an increasing number of Bartonella species have been identified as zoonotic pathogens, transmitted by animal bites, scratches, arthropods and even by needle sticks. Considering the diversity of newly discovered Bartonella species and subspecies and the large number and ecologically diverse animal reservoir hosts and the evolving spectrum of arthropod vectors that can transmit t...

CANINE INFECTIOUS TRACHEOBRONCHITIS (KENNEL COUGH) Aetiology Kennel cough is an infectious disease where the pathogens can act on their own or in a group. The most commonly isolated agents are Bordetella bronchiseptica, Parainfluenza III, but also canine distemper, canine herpes virus, adenovirus II and reovirus. However more recently Mycoplasma spp. appear to be emerging (often associated with...
